ANGELS OF MARS_by Elisabetta Bellino

As they entered the cave they were out of breath for a few seconds. They didn't quite know if it was because they had to get used to the Martian atmosphere or for the wonder of what was in front of their eyes. It was a magnificent vision: there were several houses made of black stones and white wood, each surrounded by a fence. It looked like some kind of countryside, but this grass, so Alexander thought, was luminous and almost iridescent, and a river flowed so shiny that it looked like a mirror. They followed the river and arrived to a city.
The roads that ran through the city were of a pearly white, with  streaks and rays that almost glowed. As in a childhood dream, a building stood in the middle of the city and it took Alexander’s breath away because it reminded him of a Disney castle. His mind ran back to a trip to Disneyland he had made as a child, and his heart felt warm.
Throughout the city around him the architecture was as if the Middle Ages met Futurism, given the towers made of the same material as the castle that dominated the city. Alexander suddenly realized that the ceiling of the cave was like a starry sky despite being below the ground, but the stars here seemed bigger, brighter. On a closer look through the visual devices, the stars proved to be hard stones, like diamonds, covering the black rock of the ceiling. Alexander and his companions couldn’t  believe what they were seeing on this supposedly dead planet. He couldn’t stop  gazing at this hidden treasure.
Then, a white flash made him look away. He  tried to understand what it was and when he focused, he saw that the lightning he had seen was actually a pair of wings of the purest white, and those wings were attached to a figure with a skin just as white. She had long flowing hair, red like the sunsets Alexander used see from his home in California. How beautiful she was! This girl had fair eyes with thick dark eyelashes and lovely rosy cheeks. Her figure was quite thin, and her tight pants and leather jacket, or whatever the material was, were of the deepest black, just like her boots. If the city was wonderful, she was even more so.

She moved slowly  towards the strangers. She was an angel who fought the demons to protect the Earth, but she had never seen humans on her planet, Mars. She looked at the three strangers. Standing in front of her were two young men and young woman. The woman was of medium height with slightly tanned complexion and green eyes, her auburn hair tied in two braids. One of the man was not very tall, with fair skin, black hair that pointed in every direction and hazel eyes. Both had American flags on their space suits. The last of the three drew her attention more than the others. He was tall, with amber complexion , blond sun-bleached hair, unkempt but falling on his face in gentle, defined locks, which made him beautiful. She understood all too well that his blue eyes were lost for a moment when he saw her.
When the girl talked her voice was sweet and gentle. She asked who they were  and what they were doing there. It took Alexander a few minutes to answer, as the sweet music of the girl’s voice had enthralled him. “We are explorers, NASA astronauts. I’m Alexander, and they are Diana and James. Who are you?”
She seemed surprised at his words and said, “I am an angel hunter and my name is Aline.”

Alexander was amazed, and the words came out before he could stop them: “A what?”. Aline answered: “An angel hunter, we are angels that kill demons from the world to protect you humans. This is a divine task, we often come to Earth to protect humans, but you don’t see us. This is our planet, where we live, grow and train to become warriors.” She didn’t know if she was allowed to give this information, but she couldn’t hide anything to those blue eyes that were locked with hers. She knew that what she felt would tie her life to his indissolubly... forever.

MARTIAN HELL_by Jonathan Palacios

May 15th, 2052
We have finally landed on the red planet, it’s completely inhabitable. We will have to work hard to make this planet habitable; we know from studies done 37 years ago that there is water under the surface of the planet, we have everything to break up the soil but we’ll wait for tomorrow because we are exhausted from the journey. We don’t know what we are going to find down there and for that reason we came equipped with weapons, maybe we’ll find hostile “Martians’’ but I don’t think so. If we do, I will fight. I might be a retired soldier but I’m still a warrior. Tomorrow will be a day of hard work.

May 16th, 2052
Today we begin our task, the Martian soil is harder than we thought, the excavator is still working, moving slowly. It looks like the soil is made of diamond; from the Earth they tell us that we have to be patient.

May 17th, 2052
We have reached the Martian underground at last, the temperature down here is -18ºC, and at that temperature we found liquid water. Our experts are analyzing it, what surprised us was a humanoid silhouette in the distance; it saw us and ran away. Everyone is scared but at the same time excited because today we announced to the Earth the first sighting of life on Mars. Tomorrow we are going down an underground gorge to inspect the area.

May 18th, 2052
Four of us set off to explore the gorge, but unfortunately only three came back. Our friend Mick was kidnapped by those beasts, we were walking together when suddenly a creature appeared. He was orange and had green things in his face. He didn’t look hostile, that’s the reason why we didn’t shoot him, but quickly he took Mick, down there it was very dark and we couldn’t find him, everyone was petrified when we saw the Martian. We couldn’t do anything, it all happened in the blink of an eye. No one wants to go down there anymore, but I have to go and find Mick.

May 20th, 2052
I wanted to go down by myself, but everybody stopped me, I want to go and bring Mick back, I know he is still alive because his vital signs still appear on the computer. He shows some alterations in his normal parameters but it must be the cold or the fear.

May 23th, 2052
Two scientists died today, they seem to have been infected by a powerful bacterium. According to the other scientists in our team the bacterium was in the water that we collected. The deceased had been entrusted with analyzing the water. Everybody is going crazy and to top it, we lost contact with Earth, our antenna seems to be broken, maybe the Martians broke it, who knows?!!

May 25th, 2052
People here are gradually losing their minds. I found a perfect moment to escape. I have to find Mick. As I was walking down the gorge I saw a Martian but he didn’t see me. I got lost in the caves and found a kind of Martian laboratory. Mick was there, one of his eyes was missing, his left hand had been cut off and his right leg had also been amputated right above his knee. He saw me and told me they were studying him like a test rat. He gave me his database chip and asked for my gun. I gave it to him and as I was leaving the laboratory a shot echoed through the caves, the sound attracted the Martians and I had to make a fast escape. While running for my life I saw an alien ship for one passenger. I flew it to our base, and fortunately no one followed me. But when I got to the base I couldn’t find anyone, and right now I’m here alone in the ship. I’ll wait until tomorrow to go and find the others. I need to rest and try hard to keep my cool. An unnamable horror shakes the very marrow of my bones.

May 26th, 2052
It is early, the sun has not yet risen, I’m hearing noises outside the ship, I think there are things out there that want to crawl they way in……. I’ll have to go out and somehow escape to the spaceship.

Jan 20th, 2058
My name is Chris Novel and I found this diary, what was on it belonged to Johnston Olimar, a notorious astronaut who disappeared six years ago with all of his crewmembers. I found his database in the depths of a cave where we found what look like Martian ships.

The terrestrial spaceship that landed six years ago, the “Apollo 503” was found by my men a few days ago. Many corpses of humanoid beings were scattered on board, seemingly wounded to death. We don’t know what became of Johnston Olimar and his crew.

DIAMONDS ON MARS_by Marco Pappagallo

After years of research and attempts, the astronauts had finally landed on the Martian soil. They had immediately begun to drill the ground, because they knew there was a net of underground rivers just beneath the surface. But none of them was prepared to what they saw the minute they reached the first underground cave.
It was similar to the Terrestrial caves, with stalactites and stalagmites, the difference was that these formations weren't calcareous, they were made of diamond. There were stalactites and stalagmites in different colours: ruby, sapphire, emerald, all shaped like spikes. They were all around the cave, which was illuminated by their presence, as if they had a light of their own.
The astronauts gazed. They saw that the cave stretched for a while, so they began to head towards the other end. When they finally came out of that colored and lighted hallway, they saw something wonderful. There was a huge pit with a great number of tiny houses lit by the coloured diamonds the astronauts had seen in the hallway. It looked like a tiny city on a Christmas celebration.
The astronauts went down a narrow flight of stairs to get to the miniature city. They saw small silhouettes made of light moving through the streets. They had human-like features, they looked like children, but the light they emitted was so strong that you could barely make out their contours. All those little figures began to run at the sight of the astrounauts, but without making a sound. They looked like ghosts.
One of them was courageous enough to slowly approach them, looking at them with small black eyes.  When they were close enough, the little alien reached out pointing his little finger at the astronauts. The humans were perplexed, but one of them knelt in front of the alien, and the astronaut's index touched the alien's. The alien smiled, and all the other hidden little aliens came out from their hiding places and surrounded the astronauts. The astronauts began to show the aliens a few objects they had brought with them. The aliens looked surprised, especially after they were shown an electric battery.
One of the aliens gave the humans a big pile of coloured and bright diamonds. In the head of the astronauts, a tiny childish voice resounded happily: "This is our energy source. It is clean and everlasting. Take it with you and show it to your fellow humans on Earth. Stop fighting over energy sources, live in peace like we do. Go back to Earth and share these stones. There is no need to fight, there is enough for everybody. And if you need more, come back and we'll give you some more to you. Share the love, live in peace." The golden child smiled, his pretty face beaming with a light so peaceful that all the astronauts smiled back to him. All the other shiny children began to sing a sweet tune. "Leave in peace, share the love, live as brothers".
The humans returned to Earth, happy for their peaceful encounter with the aliens and for the wonderful things that they had seen. All of them had received a handful of beautiful diamonds. They sat smiling in their spaceship, still mesmerized by the beauty of those little shining figures and by the sweetness of their voices.
But as their journey back to Earth went on, the warmth in their hearts began to dissipate, and more practical thoughts crowded their minds. "Do you think we should share this energy source with the Russians and the Chinese, captain?"  "Of course not. We could build weapons that could finally subjugate the other nations for good." He smiled. He thought it wouldn't be too hard to come back to Mars and build a mine in the caves, so that more diamonds could be taken. All diamonds actually, so they would have the monopoly of this incredible source of energy.
He wasn't quite surprised, after talking to the colonels on ground control at the NASA station in Houston, that everybody on Earth had had approximately the same ideas about the diamonds. The final establishment of the superiority of one nation over the others. For good.
Ground control was waiting impatiently for their landing in Houston. They applauded as the spaceship touched the ground. That was about the time when the diamonds went off. The explosion erased Houston in a second, irradiating a light so bright that it was seen on Mars with clarity. The next second, the whole Earth exploded.

"We have watched them for milleniums_ said a sweet child-like voice on Mars. "We all know that they would have destroyed us like they did with entire civilizations on their planet. It was either us or them." The other tiny silhouettes smiled a sad smile. Then they went back to their little peaceful lives.

SHINY LITTLE EYES_ by Andrea Pozzoli

After years of research and attempts, the astronauts had finally landed on the Martian soil.
They had immediately begun to drill the ground, because they knew there was a net of underground rivers just beneath the surface. But none of them was prepared to what they saw the minute they reached the first underground cave.
They found a system of tunnels full of ice, a type of ice that didn’t melt easily. It was strange because there were brooks of water: why didn’t it freeze in such a low temperature? How could it flow? The astronauts couldn’t find an answer, but the captain said: ”Questions for later. We haven’t got any time to waste. Right now our goal is to see as much as we can. So keep on walking. I think we’ll have much to report to our base on Earth.”
The astronauts resumed their exploration. Some passage were blocked by ice, and they had to look for other ways because they couldn’t open those, it would have taken too long.
In the end, they found something unexpected, something alive, something like…a reptile! It was like a lizard, but bigger, with three little eyes on the sides of his head and six legs. But the greatest oddity was his skin. It was constantly changing color. An astronauts tried to catch it, and realized that the lizard was hot. He managed to hold the creature for no more than a few seconds, because it wriggled strongly, until it managed to turn around and bite the man. The astronaut immediately let go of the reptile, blood dripping from his torn spacesuit. The lizard quickly ran away, disappearing in the darkness of an underground cave.

“Follow it!” exclaimed the captain. The astronauts rushed after the creature, but in a few minutes they were surrounded by lizards. They were of many colours, and every color was mirrored in the ice. The lizards looked menacing, and they were closing in.

“We have to get out of here!” cried the captain. The lizards were getting closer and closer. A firearm shot, burning a lizard. The creature sent a shrill cry of agony, that echoed in the caves. More lizards came, and they crept on the walls and ceiling of the cave, until all around the astronauts there was nothing but colored skin, shiny little eyes and pointed little teeth. Thousands of extremely pointed little teeth.

THE FIRST VOYAGE TO MARS_ by Andrea Groppelli

After years of research and attempts, the astronauts had finally landed on the Martian soil.
They immediately began to drill the ground, because they knew there was a net of underground rivers just below the surface. But none of them was prepared to what they saw the minute they reached the first underground cave.
When the astronauts, after long excavations, came to the first cave, they immediately noticed that it was very big, full of stalactites and stalagmites, a confirmation that there was actually water in the Martian caves.
At the bottom of the cave the astronauts noted the presence of an underground lake of modest dimensions, and having very sophisticated spacesuits that could also be used as diving suits, they decided to inspect the bottom of the underground lake, to look for possible Martian life forms underwater.
At the bottom of the lake the astronauts noticed a pile of rocks, probably fallen into the water after a failure of the cave ceiling above, or so they thought. The rocks seemed to obstruct an underwater passage. One of the astronauts decided to remove one of the large rocks, but the minute the rock was gone, a strong undertow pulled everyone violently through the underwater passage.
After covering several meters underwater, the astronauts found themselves on the surface of another lake in another cave. As they made it to the shore, they saw some strange people on the shores. The astronauts were very frightened, because the strangers were pointing some strange objects to them which looked like weapons, and did not seem very friendly.
The strange people were different from any kind of creature that the astronauts had ever seen: they were very tall and strong, with a very long face and long blonde hair, almost white. Their eyes were completely black and their skin was gray with blue and purple stripes.
The astronauts tried to communicate with the Martians without any great success. Then a Martian, who had different clothes from the others, came forward. With great amazement on the part of the astronauts, he spoke their language. He told them that his people had been watching them since they had left the Earth with their spacecraft, and had been waiting for their arrival on the Red Planet. The Martian,  named Lincoln, also explained that for centuries his people had been watching humans, so they knew to perfection every single feature of their culture as well as their language.
Lincoln took them to their capital city with a spaceship navigating at high speed through the long caves and underground channels. The capital was named Thronjeim, it was in a huge cave of incredible height, so wide you could barely see the end of it. The astronauts had never seen a city so full of futuristic buildings and structures, and shiny vehicles that flew effortlessly in the midst of the tall buildings. The city was on the move and nothing ever stopped.
Lincoln reached the highest palace of all, stopped the ship and asked the astronauts to get off. Inside the building the astronauts met the Governor of the Martian people. The Governor of the Martians was a women with long hair, electric blue skin and a tall and slim body. Her name was Clair.
Clair told them the story of her people since the early Martians, told them they were peaceful people who did not use violence, except when threatened. Finally, she told the astronauts that the Martians knew that the humans would to colonize Mars if they knew it was possible to live with the water underground. Thus she asked the astronauts to swear allegiance to the Martians and never reveal the truth about Mars, saying that it was uninhabitable. If the truth was ever revealed, her people would extinguish the human race to defend themselves from their destructive ways.

With these last words, Clair left the room, and the Martian Governor escorted the astronauts back to their spaceship.

MARTIAN APOCALYPSE_ by Alice Grumelli

What they saw was terrifying: in a corner near the entrance of the cave there was a pile of dead aliens. The astronauts tried to understand how the Martians were like, but the bodies were decomposed so they could only see that the corpses were very small and had some kind of legs. At a closer look, the legs turned out to be six, of which two were near the head and had two pincers. The others legs didn't have fingers and where frog-like.
After the examination, the astronauts went ahead through the cave and soon after they found a city. It was an apocalyptic alien landscape. The red Martian sand covered everything, and the astronauts could only see the roofs of the houses and something that kind of looked like cars. Apparently there wasn't any vegetation nor water. They decided to inspect the city looking for water and life.
One of the astronauts approached a "car", wiped the glass and saw that there were two little dead creatures inside, one seemed bit by the other and dried blood was shed everywhere. They made camp and tried to get some rest, and the day after they began to dig the access to the entrance of one of those houses. The buildings were small and different from ours, they didn't have any window nor a garden. Finally they found the door.
The first floor had shattered furniture and broken objects everywhere, as if there had been a burglary or an act of vandalism. They found some alien technology, but it was thrown to the floor, broken to pieces. But nothing could have prepared them for what they saw on the second floor. There were seven rooms that  looked like bedrooms. One of these rooms was very small and the door was closed. They approached the door and opened it. Four of the little Martian creatures had been torn apart and the room was covered in dry violet blood. In a corner, a strange animal also lied dead and covered with blood.
The astronauts were very scared and they rushed out of the house. When they calmed down a bit, they decided to continue the research. For a week the astronauts tried to understand why these creature were all dead and what had happened to them, but they couldn't figure it out.
They asked for reinforcements, and the Earth sent another spaceship. With the help of the other astronauts they discovered a big lake and a forest near the city. There was also a lake. The water on Mars was red and very beautiful: when the sun rays made their way through the crevices of the cave and touched the water, it changed color from red to orange, and when the sun went down and the cave was all dark, the water became violet, like it was magical. The trees on Mars had yellow leaves with blue veins on them, and they have a spiral shape. The astronauts stood amazed at the beauty that surrounded them, as the biochemical team made all possible exams in their portable laboratories.
After three months they found the truth about the death of the Martian civilization. Before the extinction, an alien had managed to record some sort of video in which he showed some images. They discovered that in the last year of its life the population had grown so much that they had a shortage of water. They sent some spaceships to cook for water  on other planets. They knew that there was water on Earth, but they also knew that our civilization had polluted all the water.
So they started a program for the research of water in outer space. After a year they found a planet full of water and uninhabited. They took this water, purified it and brought it back with them in big containers, but they didn't know that inside this water there were bacteria so small and strong they couldn’t be eliminated nor even detected with any known technology. When they drank this water, the bacteria attacked their brain and the creatures became violent, so they started to kill each other. The animals were also infected. They couldn't develop a vaccine because the outbreak was very violent and rapid and after a short time all of the aliens were dead.

Today, every March 3rd we celebrate "the day of the first landing on Mars" which is a festivity where we remember all of this.

THE BLUE TREASURE_by Camilla Tamborrino

Many years had passed since the world's population had been decimated and life on Earth had completely changed because of the water shortage. There were no more states and governments, only small communities in constant struggle with each other for the possession of the few resources left on Earth. There were no more buildings, schools, hospitals, everything had been destroyed during the battles and wars.  Everyone’s only thought was survival, even if this meant killing other people.
The only hope left was to look for water on Mars, the only planet where there may be some.A team of volunteers was created that would travel to Mars and try to save the planet Earth. The team was composed of archaeologists, biologists and chemists led by professor Reyes, an ex Us Marine who had become professor of biochemistry at the end of his military service.
After years of research and unfruitful attempts, Captain Reyes and his team were finally ready to leave the Earth and head towards Mars for the most important mission of all times. As soon as they had landed on the Martian soil they begun to drill the ground, because they suspected there could be a net of underground rivers just beneath the surface. But none of them was prepared to what they saw the minute they reached the underground quarries.
After the red dust raised by the diggers settled, the astronauts were shocked to see a large stone staircase. What was a staircase doing on Mars? Wasn’t Mars uninhabited?
Everyone stood motionless, staring blankly at the staircase, until Captain Reyes finally began walking down the stairs without a word. Everyone quietly followed the captain and descended the cave for what seemed an eternity. Once they reached the bottom of the staircase,  they couldn’t quite wrap their minds about what awaited for them in the dusk:  a group of buildings that looked like the Egyptian Pyramids.
Those “Red Pyramids” were the same as those we have on Earth, the only difference was their vibrant scarlet color and the symbols on their walls, that bore some resemblance to hieroglyphics. The astronauts were shocked by this discovery. They walked around the pyramids and behind the largest of them, they found a huge temple carved in stone, with tall columns at its sides. The astronauts went in and, at the feet of  a huge statue, they met a small creature with dry red skin and long arms with bony hands and long nails. The creature was wearing dirty rags covered in red dust, and didn’t seem to notice their presence.
As Captain Reyes slowly stepped forward and touched its back, the creature turned and stood silent for a moment, staring at the astronauts with its small black eyes.  Suddenly it opened his mouth and began to speak.  Everyone was surprised to hear the creature deliver its speech in fluent English: “Humans! We know why you are here! We have been observing you since you left the Earth on your shiny rocket. You are looking for the blue treasure. For a long time, my people has travelled among galaxies in search of water.” Said the creature with an inhuman voice.
“We have already lived on your planet many years before the human race was born. We couldn’t force ourselves to destroy some of our wonderful buildings that you exploit today as a tourist attraction.”
The captain answered: “Why are you telling us all this?” “It is better for you to look for the Blue Treasure somewhere else. Here it's all over now... Go back to where you came from before my people arrive here. They are already on their way, and once they get here they will slay you.”
“Why should I trust you and your words?” said Reyes. The creature started laughing, a high-pitched laughter as dry as the Martian dust: “ I cannot prove my words, but if I were you I would not venture to find out. We will not follow you if you escape now, and won’t hurt you unless you return here again!”.
The astronauts escaped from the temple and in a short time they prepared the spaceship and returned home without water but with the knowledge that we humans are not the only ones in search of the blue treasure that was once so abundant on Earth, but that the foolishness of human kind has wasted away.
